  • Louisiana: 1830

  • Virginia: 1830 (original law 1819)

  • Alabama: 1833 (original law 1831)

  • Mississippi: 1831 (original law 1823)

Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas and Florida did not have specific anti-literacy laws, but relied instead on custom and patrols.
